Charaka Samhita
This text focuses mainly on internal medicine, diagnosis, physiology, and the causes of disease.

Sushruta Samhita
Known for its advanced knowledge of surgery, anatomy, and clinical methods, this text is considered highly significant in the history of medicine.

Kashyapa Samhita
This text is particularly important in areas like pediatrics, gynecology, and obstetrics.

Together, these texts helped shape Ayurveda into a complete healing system with principles that are still studied and practiced today.

Philosophy Behind Ayurveda

Ayurveda is deeply connected with ancient Indian philosophy. It is based on the idea that human beings are not separate from nature—they are a part of it.

According to Ayurveda, the same forces that exist in the natural world also exist within the body. When these forces remain balanced, health is maintained. When they become disturbed, discomfort and disease may arise.

This philosophy teaches that good health depends on:

  • living in harmony with nature

  • following a balanced lifestyle

  • eating according to one’s needs

  • respecting natural body rhythms

Key Concepts in Ayurveda

1. The Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhutas)

Ayurveda teaches that everything in the universe, including the human body, is made up of five elements:

  • Earth (Prithvi) – structure and stability

  • Water (Jal) – fluidity and cohesion

  • Fire (Agni/Teja) – transformation and metabolism

  • Air (Vayu) – movement and activity

  • Ether/Space (Akasha) – openness and expansion

These five elements combine in different ways to form the body and its functions.

2. The Three Doshas (Tridoshas)

One of the most well-known Ayurvedic concepts is the theory of three doshas. These are the biological energies that govern physical and mental functions.

Vata
Made of air and space, Vata controls movement, breathing, circulation, and nerve impulses.

Pitta
Made of fire and water, Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, heat, and transformation.

Kapha
Made of earth and water, Kapha provides structure, stability, strength, and lubrication.

Every person has all three doshas, but in different proportions. This unique combination shapes an individual’s constitution. When the doshas are balanced, health is supported. When they become imbalanced, the body may begin to show signs of disorder.

3. Dhatus (Body Tissues)

Ayurveda also explains that the body is supported by seven dhatus, or tissues:

  • Rasa (plasma)

  • Rakta (blood)

  • Mamsa (muscle)

  • Meda (fat)

  • Asthi (bone)

  • Majja (marrow and nervous tissue)

  • Shukra (reproductive tissue)

These tissues help maintain the body’s strength, nourishment, and function.

4. Agni (Digestive Fire)

Another essential idea in Ayurveda is Agni, or digestive fire. Agni is not only about digestion in the stomach. It also relates to metabolism, nutrient absorption, and transformation within the body.

When Agni is strong and balanced, food is properly digested and converted into nourishment. When Agni becomes weak or disturbed, imbalance may begin.

Ayurvedic Approach to Prevention and Healing

A major strength of Ayurveda is its focus on prevention. It encourages people to maintain health through simple, consistent habits rather than waiting for illness to appear.

Common Ayurvedic wellness practices include:
